Winston-Salem
Winston-Salem, NC is located halfway between Atlanta, Ga. and Washington, DC. It is only a two-hour drive to the mountains and a four-hour trip to the ocean.
The “Twin City” of Winston-Salem emerged in 1913 when Winston and Salem were officially joined.
Salem was founded in 1766 as one of the earliest planned communities in the American colonies. Skilled craftsmen opened sawmills, tanneries and breweries, and Salem quickly grew into a trading center and congregation town. Winston located just north of Salem was founded in 1849.
Richard Joshua Reynolds moved to the area in 1875 and started what would eventually become the RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company. As the economic contribution of tobacco declined the once prominent industry was replaced by banking, technology, medicine, medical research and biotechnology. Winston-Salem today is the 11th largest financial center in the country, the home of two major medical centers, Pepsi-Cola Customer Service Center, Sara Lee Corporation, Tyco International and the home of Krispy Kreme’s corporate headquarters.
Downtown Winston-Salem is in the midst of an exciting revitalization phase, with old tobacco warehouses, textile mills and vacated shops being renovated into lofts, condos and town homes. There is also an Arts District, outdoor music venues and sidewalk cafés.
