Historic Neighborhoods
Of Winston-Salem
West Salem
The West Salem neighborhood is located in the southeast corner of the city of Winston Salem, NC and just west of the historic town of Old Salem. West Salem boasts a large stock of historic homes and was added to the National Register of historic places in January 2005. There are some good buys in this diverse neighborhood with prices ranging from around $70,000 for a 2 bedroom, 1 bath home and up to $160,000 for 3 bedrooms, 2 baths.
West End
The historic neighborhood known as West End has become an island of calm in the midst of a bustling city. Built around one of the first electric streetcar lines in the country the West End boasted “Millionaires Row,” where the Reynolds and Hanes families kept homes bought with manufacturing fortunes. In the 1960s urban re-design and the aging of the neighborhood threatened the West End’s streetscape.
Local residents and friends thankfully stepped in to preserve the beauty of the unique and substantial homes. Home prices in West End range from $147,000 to $425,000.
Washington Park
The Washington Park area is home to the North Carolina School of the Arts. Situated just south of downtown Winston Salem many of its homes are reminiscent of days gone by when its residents took an evening stroll and visited with neighbors. Homes are typically 2 stories with large front porches. This neighborhood is in its revival stages with many home renovated and more under renovation. Prices range from $130,000 to $425,000 for a five-bedroom house with a separate apartment/studio.
Buena Vista
Buena Vista is home to many second and third generation families. Manicured lawns and flowerbeds show off seasonal plantings. Christmas is a sight to see with beautiful evergreen wreaths and Moravian stars. Homes in this neighborhood often sell by word of mouth before a sign goes in the yard. As a side note Buena Vista is not pronounced in the Spanish pronunciation but the Southern way. Homes in this neighborhood range in price from $250,000 to $2,950,000.
Ardmore
Ardmore is the largest of all of Winston-Salem’s historic neighborhoods. Rumored to be named after the developer’s hometown in Pennsylvania, Ardmore was nothing but cornfields until around 1915. Created as a middle class neighborhood it was the first neighborhood to be built on the, then, outskirts of Winston-Salem. Many of the homes have their original detached garages in the back. Ardmore was a commuter neighborhood for families working in the city. You will find many different styles of homes here. Bordered by both medical centers Ardmore is home to many medical professionals and young families. Ardmore was admitted to the National Register of Historic places in August of 2004.

Old Salem
Affectionately known locally as Old Salem, Historic Salem was first settled in 1766 by Moravians, a Protestant faith from Bohemia which is now part of the Czech Republic. Salem was home to many skilled trades such as blacksmiths, carpenters, shoemakers, bakers, gunsmiths and others. Historic buildings in Salem include the Salem Tavern where George Washington slept two nights in 1790; St. Philips Moravian Church, originally built for both enslaved and free African-American Congregationists; a Boys' School and many other restored homes and shops. Salem College, founded in 1772 is one of the oldest womens' institutions of higher learning in the U.S. and Salem Academy is also in Old Salem. The restored settlement is within walking distance of  Washington Park and a short driving distance from the others above
